Hire KC, managed by KC Social Innovation Center, is paying close attention to the day-to-day news and updates regarding COVID-19, and to the guidelines from the states of Missouri and Kansas, and the city of Kansas City’s stay-at-home orders.
A message from Kari Keefe, Executive Director, KC Social Innovation Center.
If you’re like us, you are asking yourself “What will summer look like?” The answer is – we do not yet know. As we adjust our eyes to the light of this viral world order, we can’t know how the coming weeks and months will unfold, but we do know this: we are 100% committed to putting opportunity into the hands of Kansas City’s youth – and that includes some version of our summer program.
With abrupt cancellations coming from all sides – employers are left to decide the fate of their upcoming plans and the interns who come with them. For many of our partners, the decision still looms…
According to a recent poll of 1,000 college students by Handshake:
- 30% said their internship offers had been rescinded.
- 14% said their internships were scheduled to proceed as planned
- 6% reported that their internships had gone virtual.
- 84% of students said they would participate in a remote internship.
Today, individuals who apply for the summer 2020 Hire KC Internship Program are told to expect delays, changes, and a significant decrease in the number of available opportunities. We are actively innovating-on-demand and in real-time in order to meet the current market conditions – which are virtual and online. And we continue to address the imperatives around internet access and/or devices for those who may lack those resources.
The path ahead is not clear, but we most certainly have the tools to pave the way; so please stand by as we chart this unknown course, and we’ll keep you posted of all the ways you can take part, connect and jump on board as we accelerate into this whatever this summer may bring.
Hire KC is making every effort to source safe experiences, and to adapt to online and virtual opportunities, where possible. But delays are to be expected, and our timeline has been impacted as a result. Additionally, it’s worth noting that the number of experiences in the Hire KC Accelerator (our job board) are not where they usually are by this time of year.
Please stay tuned and check back here for news and announcements regarding Summer 2020. Your patience is most appreciated.
As each day progresses with new developments, we want to personally assure you of KC Social Innovation Center’s dedication to the safety, health, and well-being of our students, partners, and our community.
- HIRE KC is suspending all events until further notice. We are exploring ways to extend our fair and student experiences online or virtually, and will keep all schools, students and partners apprised of our options moving forward.
- Internship and job posting and hiring delays are to be expected.
We encourage all Kansas Citians to stay informed through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Jackson County Health Department, and Kansas City Health Department.
