Hire KC – powered by KC Social Innovation Center – has joined forces with KC Common Good to bring paid opportunities to youth on Kansas City’s historic east side this summer through the Working for Youth initiative.
Hire KC aims to put 250 youth ages 14-18 into 8-week internships designated for zip codes where these kinds of transformative experiences can change future trajectories and create a ripple of healthy outcomes for all involved.

American Jazz Museum || Located in the Historic 18th; Vine Jazz District in Kansas City, MO, the American Jazz Museum showcases the sights and sounds of jazz through interactive exhibits and films, the Changing Gallery exhibit space, Horace M. Peterson III Visitors Center, The Blue Room, and Gem Theater. Since its inception in September 1997, the Museum hosts thousands of students, scholars, musicians and fans of the arts for over 200 performances, education programs, special exhibitions, community events and more each year, providing an opportunity to learn about the legends, honor their legacy, or simply enjoy the sounds of modern day jazz.

Bridging the Gap || Bridging The Gap (BTG) works to make the Kansas City region sustainable by “connecting environment, economy and community,” and is the leading organization in the area providing environmental education and volunteer action through more than 1,800 volunteers annually.

Creative Emajinations || Creative Emajinations exist to provide performing, art, music and dance services to underserved youth regardless of financial circumstances with the help of skilled volunteers.
Cross-Lines Community Outreach || Cross-Lines was established in 1963 as “a place of hope” for those struggling with the hardships of poverty. We are a safety net for our community. We provide direct assistance to at-risk families, the elderly, and single individuals struggling to make ends meet. The mission of Cross-Lines is to provide people in the Kansas City area affected by poverty with services and opportunities that encourage self-confidence, meet the needs of today, and provide the tools for future self-sufficiency. We have three program focuses: Hunger Relief, Housing Stabilization, and Basic Needs Services. Our Hunger Relief programs include our Food Pantry, Community Kitchen, Senior Food Boxes, and Community Garden. The Housing Stabilization services include Case Management, Rent/Utility Assistance, and Homeless Rehousing Services, and Basic Needs Services include clothing vouchers, Kansas City Medicine Cabinet, toiletry assistance, diaper distribution, and showers and laundry services.
Heartland Chamber Music || HCM’s focus is twofold: chamber music and outreach. The Heartland Chamber Music Festival has grown into one of the most nationally recognized pre-college chamber music programs in the Midwest. During July and August each year, our distinguished faculty from universities, conservatories, and professional symphonies impart their knowledge and passion for chamber music during our student-focused festivals. The newest program, String Sprouts is an El Sistema based Outreach program. Sprouts is a free music education program bringing five years of music curriculum beginning in preschool to children living below the poverty line.
Inclusion Connections || We are a nonprofit serving young people with developmental disabilities with programs including PawsAbilities, a daytime job skills training program where student make dog treats, sew bandanas, and create other products and sell them in our onsite retail and mobile stores. We also have evening classes such as cooking, art, theater, fitness, and a great daytime Summer Camp. Interns could get a taste of both nonprofit and small business operations!

Kansas City Young Audiences || Kansas City Young Audiences, founded in 1961, is the original provider of arts education programs for children and youth in the Kansas City metro. Our programs serve approximately 100,000 students annually, and for many, it is their first brush with the arts. Nearly 70% of the students we serve come from lower-income homes and may not have access to these experiences if it weren’t for KCYA and our 150 partner teaching artists. KC Pet Project || KC Pet Project is the Animal Shelter, and Animal Services Division for the City of Kansas City Missouri.
KIPP KC || KIPP KC is part of a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory charter schools with a track record of preparing students in educationally under served communities for success in college and in life. KIPP KC opened its first school, KIPP Endeavor Academy, in 2007 with approximately 31 fifth grade students. Today, KIPP Endeavor has grown to serve students in Kindergarten through 8th grade and is currently educating approximately 600 students. In the fall of 2021, KIPP KC will open their first high school beginning with 9th grade. KIPP Endeavor Academy serves students from every zip code in the city, but aims to bring the opportunity for quality education to those students living in areas without access to high-performing schools. Eighty-seven percent of our students are African-American or Hispanic and all students qualify for free meals through the Community Eligibility Provision. We believe that all students will learn and achieve at high levels if given the opportunity. Mattie Rhodes Center || Mattie Rhodes Center is a nonprofit agency celebrating its 124th year of serving the Greater Kansas City community. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) || The mission of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is to end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes, and prevent underage drinking. Saving KidSight (DBA “KidSight”) || At KidSight, our goal is simple: to provide free vision screenings and comprehensive follow up for every child under 6 years old in Missouri. Vision problems in young children often go unnoticed, especially in families that lack access to healthcare. Add to that a condition, amblyopia, which can lead to blindness in one or both eyes. The best treatment for this devastating condition starts when a child is 7 years old, long before their parents even think about taking them to an eye doctor. It is our goal that every child with a vision issue gets treatment before Kindergarten, and we are working hard to make it happen. KidSight has a program to assist families with finding and paying for vision care in their community. Pre-COVID, we screened over 67,000 children statewide each year; 13,000 in the KC area alone.
Success Link Outreach || Success Link Outreach offers a hopeful vision of the future for Kansas and Missouri youth (Grades K-12) by building social and academic skills, entrepreneurship, character and leadership development during our Summer Leadership Camp. The Grooming Project ||The Grooming Project serves struggling parents in the KC Metro who have a history of generational poverty, unfinished education, addiction, and/or homelessness. The majority of students who enter our program are raising their children on $3,500 or less per year. Our mission is to empower families to become self-reliant through job training, housing, life skills, and practical solutions to end their cycle of poverty. In our program, adults with multiple barriers to employment, such as unfinished education, criminal backgrounds, and trauma can find a second chance through the in-demand, living-wage career of pet grooming. The Grooming Project’s education-based approach not only financially empowers single parents in poverty by equipping them with state-certified credentials in a competitive market, but it also ensures that they focus on improving their family’s future as a whole through parenting and budgeting classes, life skills workshops, court advocacy, and other needed services coordinated with many local organizations.
