My name is Christopher, and I am going to be a senior at Rockhurst High School this fall. I discovered Hire KC Kansas City internships through promotional emails that I received, and am very glad that I did.
I am the communications intern at the Mayor’s Office of Kansas City, and my supervisor is Jessica Ann, the Special Assistant for Communications. This internship is definitely a great gateway to journalism, which is a field I want to explore in college. I am very glad to have this opportunity.
Throughout this internship I have constantly been learning things about myself, other people, and how the city works. I have learned that I am totally capable of working and thriving in an office environment, that I’m “easy to mess with” (gullible), and also that I am friendly and likable.
I have gained invaluable experience in city government and the field of communications, such as following an ordinance (law) from beginning to end, helping coordinate a B-roll interview for the Mayor, and how to write formally and informally. I am, slowly but surely, coming out of my shell and becoming more comfortable in new social environments, and I am learning valuable lessons every day.
One lesson: If you finish the coffee, make another pot. I have also learned that the Mayor’s Office of Kansas City is a fast-paced work environment and that it is possible for me to fit right into it. I couldn’t have done any of this without the opportunities Hire KC provided for me.
