Working Together Drives Success at KCPT

Hello, friends! My name is Ju-Young Morimoto. I am a senior in high school (whoop whoop) at Lincoln College Preparatory Academy. I am a dual-enrollment student taking classes at Metropolitan Community College of Kansas City (MCCKC) Penn Valley through the program, Early College Academy. I haven’t set my eyes on a single college yet, but I’d like to go to a school with a variety of fun and interesting electives, and good business classes. I aspire to be an Arts Director, children’s book author, and illustrator.

I discovered Hire KC Youth through my community college. One day, while checking into the Early College Academy sign-in sheet, I saw a flyer nearby promoting a job fair for students. I was interested, so I applied and went to the fair. I met many great people and found internships that help support students with experience in real-world workplaces.

The internship I received from Hire KC Youth was at KCPT. I was a production intern under Sandy Woodson, the Operations Coordinator.  I did a variety of jobs and errands. My role was to take on jobs that employees needed completed, so that they could get other things done.

Instagram Takeover

Being an intern at KCPT, I did some basic activities such as folding envelopes and assisting with managing databases. I also did more production and media-related jobs, as well. I was trained to record on their cameras to film shows such as Week In Review and Ruckus.

My favorite parts of the internship, though, would have to be coordinating the Instagram Takeover with Social Media Manager, Hilary Becker, as well as making friends with my fellow intern, Honorah Maggio. I really njoyed planning and collaborating with Hilary on what we should post on KCPT’s feed and story, and working with Honorah on databases. I bonded easily with both Hilary and Honorah.

Working at KCPT I truly was able to understand what Studio Manager, Matt McClelland, meant when he told me “Everyone isn’t trying to make you fail, we are all working as a team to succeed.” He trained me on their cameras and how to take orders from the director. He had a relaxed character, but was serious when it came to his craft.

I have a tendency to be very hard on myself and be more independent when it came to tackling school assignments, so working alongside people who are nice and welcoming is an awesome feeling. Working together definitely has its perks. I felt reassured in what Matt said when I saw his words become actions. I enjoyed working with everyone. I was immersed in what it’s like to work in a media-heavy organization, as well as working with people older than me.

Thank you KCPT and Hire KC Youth for this amazing opportunity! Let’s keep in touch.
