By Ericka Trotter | I am a recent graduate from UMKC-School of Nursing and Health Sciences. I will be attending Park University this fall for my Master of Science in Health Care Administration with a concentration in Human Resource Management. My career goal is to be a Medical and Health Service Manager of a pediatric hospital. Before I complete that goal I would like to participate in the administrative fellowship that is offered a Children Mercy’s Hospital.
While I was in my undergraduate, it was required for me to do an internship for the semester, so United Inner City Services-St. Mark Child and Family Development Center is where I chose to do my internship. Months went by and my time for my internship for the spring was coming to an end. The HR Coordinator at the time asked me if I would like to continue my internship with them through the summer and I replied “yes!” UICS partnered with HKCY this summer, and through a generous sponsorship from Bank of America, HKCY helped UICS provide a paid internship for me this summer.
This is my story.
United Inner City Services
First, I will start by saying that Hire KC Youth is an awesome program. This was my first time interning through a program like this. I have learned a lot about myself through working in the organization and through HKCY itself. I found that I have gained some skills that will use be useful in my future career, such as time management, prioritization, dedication, and leadership and organizational skills. We also worked on projects on Cohort Days that showed me that I am able to collaborate with others in order to accomplish things under pressure. Being an intern through HKCY has opened the doors for me, too.
My role this summer was working with the Development and Operations teams. I helped manage the database of donors and community members and ensure all records were correct and up-to-date. I learned how vital development is when it comes to not-for-profit organizations. I also worked with the Operations team. Between the two departments, I proved to myself and supervisors that I was more than able to manage my time wisely, work professionally, and communicate confidently in all of my capacities. As the internship came to a close, I was offered a full-time position.
While I still help Development from time to time with the little things, I am very excited to work mainly with our Operations team. I am glad that I was able to experience being an intern through the HKCY program.
Thanks Hire KC Youth!
